CD-R Duplicators - keep your firmware up to date

One of the most frequent causes of CD-R mis-burns or rejects is out of date firmware on CD-R recorders.  Failures and errors during CD-R recording are rarely due to faulty discs, although manufacturing faults can occur, errors are more often caused by machine or operator errors.

Not everyone is aware that, all new CD-R writer machines contain a piece of firmware which, among other things, has a list of all known major CD-R brands and the optimum laser burn intensity for each disc.

When a CD-R machine loads a disc ready to write to it, the machine reads an initial piece of information off the disc included in which is the brand of disc. The machine then adjusts the laser according to the brand of disc.

Although there is a lot of latitude in the specifications, as disc technology moves on older machines start to have a problem with modern discs unless the firmware is updated.

If, for example, a Maxell disc is loaded, a 5 year old machine would identify it as a Maxell disc but would believe it to be a 4x speed disc because that is what was made in those days.  Today's disc may be 48x or 52x speed, and modern dyes are a lot more sensitive.

Result - the machine overburns and fails and the duplicator returns the disc complaining that it does not work in their machine.

Virtually all drive manufacturers supply free firmware updates which can be downloaded from their website or obtained on CD.  You need the machine type and current firmware version to check for latest updates, which can be quite frequent as continual improvements are made to both firmware and disc technology.

DVD-R General 16x speed discs

4x speed DVD-R discs are no longer available, certain products and brands are still available in 8x speed however the industry has now moved onto 16x speed and 8x speed is scheduled for deletion over the next 6-12 months   If you have a 2x, 4x or 8x speed machine you should ensure that your firmware is updated before using higher speed discs on your machine otherwise there is a serious risk of burning out the laser in your duplicator.  This only applies to DVD-R general, there is no compatibility issue with DVD+R.

Quantegy recording tape - supplies

Regrettably Quantegy took the decision to cease production of studio tape as from the end of February 2007.

We do have stock of most lines and are expecting another delivery later in 2007 however this is not a certainty.
